Bladesmith and metal artist Casey Vilensky creates an exquisite chef’s nakiri from high-performance Damasteel stainless damascus steel, with a twist. The blade began as a 33mm round bar of Damasteel’s ‘Bluetonge’ pattern which Casey then expertly re-forged into a ladder-pattern from which the final blade is formed. The striking visual that results is but the canvas for a hardworking tool designed for daily cooking in home and professional kitchens alike. At 178mm / 7″ long and standing 56mm high at the heel with tall, subtly convex bevels that converge at a very thin, razor-sharp edge, this blade is purposefully shaped for vegetable chopping without compromise. Balanced a hair in front of the blade’s choil, the knife moves effortlessly in the hand, while the small-batch stainless blade material greatly reduces care and maintenance and the need for frequent wipe-downs while cooking. As elegant and unique as the blade is a handle of integral-bolster construction with stepped, heirloom fit as steel merges with a ring of copper-infused ‘Space Coral’ carbon fiber, and finally, a gorgeous, multi-tone piece of sculpted figured maple.
