Editor’s notes
While the exhibit artist’s name takes center stage, it is the designer of this mid-century exhibit post that we think is most interest.
This original exhibition poster was designed by Bernard Villemot (1911–1989), one of the most influential French graphic artists of the twentieth century. Created to promote a painting exhibition by the artist Vuillermoz, the poster announces a two-week show held at Galerie Herbinet, 8 rue Bonaparte, in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district of Paris, from 1–15 December 1959.
Villemot’s distinctive visual language—bold forms, organic motifs, and a restrained yet expressive color palette—is clearly visible in the composition. While intended as a temporary promotional object, posters such as this have become enduring works in their own right, embodying the vitality of post-war Paris and the close relationship between fine art and modern graphic design.
