Antique Russell Green River Works hand forged after drop forged carbon steel 14″ slicer with 6 pin ebony handle. Blade is free from deep pits or heavy wear but there are some coarse scratches on the blade. Handle is nice and secure with no cracks or gaps.
A very handsome example of a large slicer that would have been used for fine slicing large cuts of beef. The hand forged after drop forged blade has been forged and ground beautifully and the brass pinned ebony handle is a really nice example of fine old American knife making.
J Russell was one of the very first American cutlery makers and was located in Greenfield Massachusetts the epicenter of American knifemaking and the American industrial revolution. in 1874 they moved to nearby Turner’s falls and that is when this knife dates from at which point an acid etch was used for the markings rather than a hot stamp
